Should Students Be Required to Do Homework over the Holidays.
In 2013, the University of Phoenix College of Education commissioned a survey of how much homework teachers typically give their students. From kindergarten to fifth grade, it was just under 3 hours per week; from sixth to eighth grade, it was 3.2 hours; and from ninth to twelfth grade it was 3.5 hours.
Do your homework before giving homework to your students. Assigning the right kind and the right amount of homework is important. Homework should be based on the application of the concepts learned in the classroom. Teachers should assign work that presents students with a challenge while also engaging them in age- and skill-appropriate activities.
Teachers need a summer vacation to catch up on the zzzzzs they miss throughout the school year. There were many times that I would watch the sun rise and the sun set at the school to finish some grading, last minute lesson planning, run an early morning rehearsal with some of my speech students, have a staff meeting, help a student after school with an assignment they may be struggling with, etc.
For the last 100 years or so, experts have been trying to work out if it is beneficial to give homework to kids in primary schools. In the UK, the government says it's up to the head teacher to.
Teachers should take a long, hard look at their homework practices. It seems since the beginning of time, homework has been gleefully given by teachers, and sadly accepted by students. Society almost seems to demand it. Principals cannot seem to get enough of it. Some teachers pride themselves on loading students up with hours of homework.
Homework should be a review or further practice of something learned in class so ensure that whatever homework you have assigned can be completed by students independently and with ease. To do this, conduct several comprehension tests and practice activities in class so that students feel confident enough with the material to work on their own.
Because the research on homework is mixed, teachers should think carefully about what tasks they assign for homework, and what the purpose of that homework truly is. Remember that it’s essential for students to receive feedback on their homework so that they know what they did correctly, what they did incorrectly, and what they need to do next to improve.
